Whizzer / hips in

Ties / Solo mat / Build

The rear arm sweeps up and over, the hips turn in toward it and the level drops a little.

Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

An overhook with the hips square is a position that is about to be lost. The whizzer is the same overhook with the hips turned in and lowered, which is what makes it a defence and a counter. The arm is the easy part; the hip turn is the study.

The phases

Wrestling stance: Hands ready. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Wrestling stance, phase 3 of 4: Hands ready.
Whizzer: Hips in and down. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Whizzer, phase 3 of 4: Hips in and down.

Wrestling stance

  1. Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
  2. Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
  3. Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
  4. Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.

Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.

Whizzer

  1. Stance. Start in the stance with the hands in contact.
  2. Arm over. Sweep the rear arm up and over an imagined arm, wrapping at the shoulder.
  3. Hips in and down. Turn the hips in toward the arm and drop your level a little.
  4. Release. Return the arm and the hips to the stance.

Watch for: The whizzer is in the hips, not the arm. An overhook with the hips square is a position given away.

Three common faults

Hips square
The arm goes over and nothing else moves. The hips turn in until the near hip points at the arm.
Standing up into it
The level rises as the arm rises. The level drops a little as the hips turn.
Lead hand lost
The other hand drifts back with the turn. It stays in front, working.

In the room

  1. Sweep the arm over and wrap at the shoulder.
  2. Turn the hips in toward the arm and drop the level.
  3. The whizzer is in the hips. Release and reset.
