Solo penetration step
Entries / Solo mat / Build
An unopposed entry pattern for athletes who have learned it in practice.
Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.
Why it matters
The penetration step is the engine of every leg attack: level first, then the step under the hips, then the drive off the rear leg with the chest still over the lead knee. Rehearsed alone and slowly, the order can be watched. At speed and against someone, only the result can.
The phases

Wrestling stance
- Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
- Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
- Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
- Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.
Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.
Level change
- Stance. Start in your wrestling stance.
- Bend the legs. Lower your level before attempting penetration.
- Lower base. Keep your head up as your knees and hips flex.
- Recover. Recover to your stance without straightening rigidly.
Watch for: Lowering the head alone is not a level change.
Penetration step • solo
- Stance. Use a suitable mat; do not drive a knee into hard flooring.
- Change level. Change elevation before moving into the step.
- Step through. Place the step under control; the drawing omits an opponent.
- Recover. Reset deliberately; a takedown finish is not shown.
Watch for: This is a solo entry pattern, not a complete double-leg takedown.
Three common faults
- Standing up into the step
- The chest rises as the lead foot lands. The chest stays over the lead knee through the whole step.
- Stepping before the level change
- The foot moves while the hips are still high. Level, then step.
- Knee driven into the mat
- The lead knee lands hard and the body stops. It touches and passes through; use a proper mat.
In the room
- Use a suitable mat and a movement taught by your coach.
- Rehearse slowly without driving into a partner.
- Stand back into balance before repeating.
