Sprawl on a shot / two figures

Defence / Solo mat / Build

The finished sprawl shown against a stopped shot: chest on the shooter's upper back, hands on the back, hips down and away on the toes.

Illustration of position, not a partner technique to copy without a coach. Illustration of a position, not a partner technique to copy without a coach. The second figure is static and does not resist. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

The solo sprawl teaches the shape; it cannot show what the shape is for. With a shooter under it, the pressure has somewhere to go: chest on the back, hips away from the arms, head up. This is what the solo study is rehearsing toward.

The phases

Sprawl on a shot: Hips down and away. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Sprawl on a shot, phase 3 of 4: Hips down and away.

Sprawl on a shot two figures

  1. Chest on the back. The chest lands on the shooter's upper back, not on the head.
  2. Hands on the back. Both hands press on the back rather than posting on the mat.
  3. Hips down and away. The hips are back and away from the reaching arms, on the toes.
  4. Pressure. Pressure comes down through the chest; the head stays up and the eyes forward.

Watch for: The shooter is static and its arms are not gripping. Where the hips go against a live shot depends on the shot. Illustration of position only.

Three common faults

Chest on the head
The weight lands on the shooter's head instead of the back. Chest to the upper back.
Hips in reach
The hips stay forward where the arms can wrap them. Back and away, on the toes.
Hands on the mat
The hands post on the mat and the chest weight is gone. On the back, pressing.

In the room

  1. Chest on the upper back, not on the head.
  2. Hands press on the back; they are not posted on the mat here.
  3. Hips back and away from the reaching arms, weight down through the chest.
