Duck under / level then angle

Entries / Solo mat / Build

Level change, a step past the line, the head dipping under an imagined arm, then up on the far side at an angle.

Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

The duck under is the attack that comes off a tie, and it fails when the head ducks without the level changing under it. Then the hips are behind, the head is low and the whole thing stands up. This study puts the level change first and the head dip second so the order is watched.

The phases

Wrestling stance: Hands ready. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Wrestling stance, phase 3 of 4: Hands ready.
Duck under: Step past and dip. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Duck under, phase 3 of 4: Step past and dip.

Wrestling stance

  1. Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
  2. Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
  3. Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
  4. Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.

Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.

Duck under

  1. Stance. Start in the stance with the hands in contact.
  2. Change level. Change level by bending the legs, not the back.
  3. Step past and dip. Step the lead foot past the line and dip the head under an imagined arm.
  4. Come up at an angle. Rise on the far side at an angle, hips first, head last.

Watch for: The level change comes before the step. Ducking with the head alone leaves the hips behind and stands you up.

Three common faults

Head only
The head dips and the hips stay high. The legs change the level; the head goes with them.
Stepping short
The lead foot lands on the line instead of past it. Past the line, to the outside.
Coming up square
The finish faces the same way as the start. The finish is at an angle, on the far side.

In the room

  1. Level with the legs, not the back.
  2. Step the lead foot past the line and dip the head under.
  3. Come up on the far side, hips first, head last.
