Double leg finish / drive through

Entries / Solo mat / Build

From the penetration knee: the trail leg steps up outside, the hips drive forward and up, the hands stay together.

Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

A double leg is finished by the hips, not the arms. The step up with the trail leg and the drive forward through the position are what move someone; standing straight up from the knee moves nobody. This is the finish shape without the person it would move.

The phases

Double leg finish • solo drive: Drive the hips. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Double leg finish • solo drive, phase 3 of 4: Drive the hips.
Wrestling stance: Hands ready. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Wrestling stance, phase 3 of 4: Hands ready.

Double leg finish • solo drive

  1. Knee down. Start from the penetration knee with the chest up and the hands together low.
  2. Trail leg steps up. Bring the trail leg up and to the outside in one step.
  3. Drive the hips. Drive the hips forward and up through the position; the hands stay together.
  4. Stand through. Finish standing through, not standing up. No opponent is shown.

Watch for: Standing straight up from the knee is not a finish. The hips travel forward through the space, not up out of it.

Wrestling stance

  1. Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
  2. Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
  3. Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
  4. Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.

Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.

Three common faults

Standing up from the knee
The hips rise vertically and the chest goes back. Forward first, then up.
Trail leg late
The drive starts before the trail foot is planted outside. Step, then drive.
Hands separating
The hands come apart on the drive. They stay together at hip height.

In the room

  1. Start from the knee with the chest up and the hands together low.
  2. Trail leg up and outside in one step.
  3. Drive the hips through the space, not up out of it. No opponent is shown.
