Level change / reset

Stance / Solo mat / Foundation

Lower and return without adding an entry or partner.

Solo study. Solo rehearsal of a shape a coach has already shown you. No partner, no resistance, no finish against anyone. Not coach-verified.

Why it matters

A level change is the first half of every leg attack and the first half of every sprawl. If the drop comes from the back folding instead of the legs bending, everything built on it is slow and the head arrives first. This study isolates the drop so it can be watched on its own.

The phases

Wrestling stance: Hands ready. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Wrestling stance, phase 3 of 4: Hands ready.
Level change: Lower base. Rendered human phase image, three-quarter view.
Level change, phase 3 of 4: Lower base.

Wrestling stance

  1. Base. Begin with a base wide enough to move from.
  2. Knees flexed. Flex the knees and hips while keeping the head up.
  3. Hands ready. Hands stay ahead of the body, ready to make contact.
  4. Hold shape. Maintain a shape you can move from in either direction.

Watch for: Do not turn a lower stance into looking down at the mat.

Level change

  1. Stance. Start in your wrestling stance.
  2. Bend the legs. Lower your level before attempting penetration.
  3. Lower base. Keep your head up as your knees and hips flex.
  4. Recover. Recover to your stance without straightening rigidly.

Watch for: Lowering the head alone is not a level change.

Three common faults

Dipping, not dropping
The hips move ten centimetres and the head bobs. The hips should travel back and down through the knees, not straight down through the feet.
Folding at the waist
The back rounds and the chest points at the mat. The trunk inclines a little further as the hips go back; it does not collapse.
Rising rigidly
The knees lock on the way up and the stance is gone. The return finishes in the stance, still bent.

In the room

  1. Choose a comfortable range through the legs.
  2. Keep the movement slow and your eyes forward.
  3. Return to your original base.
